Our kapok zabuton is the only zabuton on the market stuffed with kapok. This mat has been getting rave reviews since we introduced it in June of 2002. It replaces the cotton batting zabuton with many advantages. Our zabutons come in three sizes (medium, large, and jumbo), and 9 colors. For easy washing, get a removable cover. Sold separately.
Features
Softer and more resilient.
Hypoallergenic.
More environmentally friendly (grown without herbacides, unlike cotton, the most chemically laden crop).
Lighter (four pounds instead of seven).
Less expensive.
Lasts much longer (kapok cushions have been passed down for generations in India).
Removable cover--sold separately--makes cleaning easy. Submerging in water may discolor the fabric.
Works in a pinch as a simple yoga mat or futon when two are placed side by side. It is very comfortable and portable. For a real sleeping mat, see our kapok yoga mat.
Choosing a Size
We offer zabutons in three sizes. When you are carrying your zafu to a retreat or local sitting group, you want the most efficient size. A zabuton which offers extra knee room will be more of a challenge to carry. However, if that extra knee room is important to you, buy a larger mat. Some meditation halls and temples like our medium zabuton dimensions because it allows more people to meditate in a limited space.
Breaking In
A new zabuton may be exta "poofy", meaning it looks very thick. When you first take it out of the box before sitting on it, it almost looks like a giant throw pillow. When you sit on it, it goes down to a normal thickness. With time, the "poofy" appearance will go away, yet your zabuton will remain amazingly springy and resilient. It usually takes about fourty hours of sitting for the zabuton sitting mat to find its true nature.
About the Size Measurements
A kapok zabuton is a dynamic object. When measuring thickness it is important to consider density. For instance, does the measurement happen before sitting or during sitting? The purpose of a zabuton is to cushion the knees, ankles and feet from the hard floor underneath. t is best to have the minimal amount of padding underneath that is comfortable (saves resources, money, and is easier to carry). Our zabutons have been tested for years to reach the perfect balance of all-round comfort. They are two inches thick underneath the knees and ankles, while other parts of the mat may be somewhat thicker. The measurements listed below are taken during sitting when the zabuton is compressed to its dynamic density (the density when in use.
